The Grand Tour

Why you should visit: An enticing ode to America's mile-deep natural wonder, this site makes you ask yourself why you haven't yet kidnapped a group of friends and headed for "the finest backpacking place on the planet." Refreshingly non-commercial, this online tour is hosted by the Grand Canyon Junkies, a group of self-appointed experts in red dirt and good times, who started their annual pilgrimage to the Canyon more than 20 years ago. They are now "hopelessly hooked." While the site provides useful descriptions of suggested routes and the nuts and bolts of backpacking the Grand Canyon, the photographs and the poetry are the most likely to get you into trouble.

Don't miss: The multiple answers to the question: "Why backpack the Canyon?"

Avoid: This is a big site to download, but all the waiting is at the beginning. Avoid pulling your hair out by thinking of this as an intermission and a chance to grab a bite.
