A LOG PROVIDES PASSAGE for Joe as he ascends a pour-off in lower Slate Canyon in 1987. We were on the return leg of a day hike to the river from our camp in Slate near the Tonto Trail. Eleven years later, the lack of a log at this spot provided a few tense moments.
