THE GOING WAS TOUGH as we climbed from Bass Rapids to the Tonto on the second day of our 1978 trip. This was our first trip into the canyon’s backcountry, and the added difficuly compared with the corridor trails took us a little by surprise. Part of our group couldn’t make it to this night’s destination, Garnet Canyon, and had to bivouac along the Tonto.
