A SPENT UTAH AGAVE serves as a milepost of sorts along the Tonto Trail between Boulder and Lonetree canyons. The Utah agave, the so-called century plant, blooms just once — at the very end of its roughly 25-year lifespan. This shot was taken during our 2005 New Hance-to-Kaibab trek.
