WE WERE TREATED to this rainbow over upper Red Canyon not long after we set out on our 1995 New Hance-to-Kaibab hike. That night, after we had set up camp at Hance Rapids, it rained long and hard — but little did we realize
how hard. Not until we emerged from the canyon at the end of the week did we learn that the rains had washed out several trails into the canyon, forcing park officials to close them.
