CONSULTING HIS COPY of Harvey Butchart’s “Grand Canyon Treks,” Jim leads our group on an exploration of upper Slate Canyon in 1979. We did some low-grade technical climbing as we tried, without success, to find the route to the rim described in Butchart’s guidebook. The waterfall in the background was there courtesy of heavy rains the previous day.
