AT LEAST we had the sense to carry plenty of water when we did our one-day rim-to-river-to-rim hike in August of 1972. But exactly why we three 18-year-olds used this single, mammoth container instead of smaller ones is a long-forgotten detail. Dennis, at right, was the one who came up with the idea of hiking the canyon. This photo was taken during our descent of the Kaibab. Later, Bob, left, lost one of his socks in the Colorado River and hiked up the Bright Angel with just one sock.
