Immersion in the mile-deep Grand Canyon is the aim of these self-proclaimed “fissure junkies” from Colorado. (The canyon is still in Arizona.) This site aims to be the next best thing to getting the “red dirt under your fingernails, in your eyes, on your teeth, and in your veins.” (Come to think of it, the site may be better!) Your companion “backpackers” spot the trails on the virtual hike and sing the praises of two-billion-year-old rock along the way. Plenty of great photos and notes on tourist routes like the Bright Angel trail and the South Bass-Royal Arch (“Pray that it hasn’t rained up top during your stay because the road through Pasture Wash can swallow up jeeps when it’s muddy”).
